Burka


The burka is knitted.
The burka is knitted. It is totally made of human hair, I like to upheave the purpose of the burka. Woman wear and has to wear it to cover up their face and hair, this burka is made of hair. Now I have to discribe the purpose of making it and find a good way to show it. It has to be 'filled' with a body otherwise it is an empy piece of knitted hair.




New project.


Weird balaclava's from the sixtieth.
I found these weird balaclava's on the internet and through E-bay I got hold of the knittingmagazine from 1965, with the knitting paterns. I will knit them with different colors of human hair.

The burka is 'growing' slowly. I knit roughly 1cm. an hour.




Kunstlijn 2005.


I participated a groupshow this year and of course I show in my ArtUnit window gallery this month. This gave me a change to brouse around myself. Saw some nice art. I realy had fun at 'Kunstfort Vijfhuizen' where Simone de Groot has her studio. At her place visitors were free to change the setting of her sculptures.




Meanwhile….


I'm busy washing hair I got from a wigmaker. She gave me a trunk full of hair during the Kloone4000 project. I am so glad with it! It is all over the house hanging to dry. Because I got so much material at the moment I'm able to start a big knitting work. I planned to knit a burka for some time now, so I got started!

This is the installation 'Kloone4000 baby prototype nr.1' made from the collected hairpockets from the Amsterdam hairdressers.




My last working day at the gallery.


Today it was the first crowded Saturday with all kind of people in the gallery. Some artists were installing their work, there were viewers, people coming in for the debat. This is what I missed the most the Saturdays I worked here. So it was a good last day working here. I finished my installation. I decided to take away the hanging baby.
Next Friday there will be a presentation evening of the participating artists.

Anneke visited me at my studio and she had a great idea for my bowls. So we did play with different compositions. This will give an idea.

Opening show Kloone4000.


The show opened its doors with a presentation by Koen Vanmechelen with his art-project 'Cosmopolitan Chicken', followed by a debat.




Kloone 4000 is starting.


Yesterday I received the first pockets filled with hair.
This is going to 'grow' into a great installation! Next Saturday I start to work in the gallery.




Project ‘Kloone4000’

Mijn werkplan tijdens deze kunstmanifestatie.
Werkproject Kloone4000.

ONDERZOEK:
Onderzoek naar reacties op het werken met menselijk materiaal.

Door middel van een advertentie op Marktplaats, de buurtkrant en aanvragen via kapsalons in de directe omgeving van galerie Retort, wil ik mensen oproepen om mij hun haar toe te sturen of liever nog, om dit persoonlijk bij mij in Retort te brengen.

Ik wil tijdens deze werkperiode onderzoeken wat mijn werk, materiaalkeuze en werkwijze bij mensen losmaakt. Sinds jaren krijg ik het haar via mijn kapper. De meeste klanten zullen niet op de hoogte zijn van wat er met hun afgeknipte haar gebeurd. Normaal gesproken wordt bij de kapper het afgeknipte haar weggegooid. Eigenlijk weet ik niet precies wat men er persoonlijk van vindt dat ik hun haar gebruik om te verwerken tot een kunstwerk. Ik ken alleen de reacties op mijn werk wanneer het geëxposeerd wordt. Deze zijn heel verschillend.
Dit project is een goede gelegenheid om zelf uit mijn veilige ‘laboratorium’ te komen en dit onderzoek te doen. Er zijn genoeg maatschappelijke discussies over het bijhouden van DNA databases en ik vraag mij af of men beseft dat iedere haar een DNA patroon bevat.

De biochemische industrie en - onderzoek zijn niet meer uit onze maatschappij weg te denken. Al onze grondstoffen en voedingsmiddelen zijn inmiddels al veredeld en gemanipuleerd, hetgeen we doodnormaal vinden. Maar als we het over het manipuleren van levende have (mens & dier) hebben, komt ons gevoel in opstand. Het is niet te voorspellen wat de gevolgen zullen zijn van manipuleren, veredelen of klonen.

Ik zal 1 dag per week (zaterdag) aanwezig zijn in de studio/werkruimte van Retort.
Mijn plan is om daar ter plekke, met het verzamelde haar, een nieuw werk te creëren.

WERK:
DNA-Baby prototype No.1
De ‘ontworpen’ mens als toekomstbeeld.
Van de haren worden strengen gesponnen waarvan een beeld gehaakt wordt. Het beeld stelt een baby voor, deze wordt letterlijk gevormd door de gesponnen strengen DNA.
